A distinctive and highly social woodpecker of montane oak and pine-oak forests across the Americas. Instantly recognizable by its striking ‘clown-faced’ facial pattern, glossy black mantle, and the bright crimson cap worn by males. Often seen foraging high along mossy tree limbs, it is famous for caching nuts and acorns in specialized storage trees called granaries.
