Biography

A little about me…

Welcome, my name is Jerry and I am an amateur nature and wildlife photographer with a soft spot for photographing birds. I retired and moved to Colombia in November of 2024 to photograph the birds in my slice of heaven on earth.

My journey began many years ago in Hawaii. My maternal grandfather Charles M Dunn was a bird enthusiast and he helped to bring the Audubon Society to Hawaii, forming Hawaii’s first chapter. So I grew up learning to appreciate and respect birds. While in Hawaii as a teenager in High School one of my life long friends got a new camera. A Pentax K1000. He and I started playing around with it and I was hooked. I bought my first camera a couple of years later in 1981, it was a Pentax ME Super which was a film camera. I bought it from the BX at Lackland AFB after finishing basic training. Since then I have had a Pentax Super Program, and a Pentax 645 medium format camera. In 2008 I bought my first digital Camera, a Canon 40D. That opened a whole new world for me. I went from taking maybe 150 photos on vacation to taking thousands. without the cost of film and processing the number of photos skyrocketed. Bird photos became much better and easier because you could just take more shots and delete the missed ones.

My latest journey began when a friend of mine, Lisa Langell a professional photographer and photo tour guide, returned from a birding tour in Costa Rica. She had highly recommended that I take a birding tour in Costa Rica because of my love for photographing birds. The more I thought about it the more I liked the idea. I started to google Costa Rica Birding Tours and Google kept sending me recommendations for both Costa Rica and Colombia. I found it strange that it was only Costa Rica and Colombia. I understood the Costa Rica part because that is what I asked to see. But Colombia? Not Panama or Brazil or any other Central or South American country. Just those two. So curiosity sent me researching Colombia. What I found was that there were more species of birds in Colombia than any other country in the world, and it was the second most biodiverse country on the planet. The more I searched the more it reminded me of Hawaii when I was growing up. I thought why not photograph Colombia? So in 2022 I visited and fell in love with the place. I retired in 2024 and moved here to spend my retirement photographing the beautiful birds and landscapes of Colombia.

Now I am sharing my journey with all of you through the glass of my camera. I hope you enjoy Nature, Though my Glass.
